The result of the eponymous Dragoon Project, the YF-03A Dragoon was developed by Standard Atomics during the course of the Colony War to fulfill the Coalition's need for a lighter, faster and more sophisticated complement to the preexisting MF-01 Titan mass-production Mobile Fencer. Implementing new advancements in the synthesization of halcyonite metamaterial, the Dragoon boasts lighter weight, superior agility and moderately superior protection in comparison to its mass-production predecessor.

Paired with its agility in both ground and space theatres, the Dragoon demonstrates vastly superior survivability to the Titan. Significant improvements in electronics include superior ECM, radar and an advanced artificial intelligence capable of recording, learning from and adapting to pilot combat data to better assist the operator's own reflexes. Augmenting this addition is an improved brain-computer interface, improving reaction times to achieve near-perfect parity with the human body's own corticomuscular transmissions. It is taller than its predecessor, standing at 18.51 metres, or 60.74 feet. With a weight of 66.64 tonnes, it is lighter than the MF-01 Titan by around five tonnes. It is powered by a M9S Compact Fusactor, which has a power output of 135MW. Though it ultimately did not see service in the Colony War, the Dragoon has since seen limited service with fencer test units.

Concerns brought on by the Colony War regarding combat in the space colonies, as well as fears of depressurization events brought on by the use of high-calibre weaponry gave rise to the newly-developed XM11 'Beamblade' - a plasma-based weapon which could quickly and cleanly eliminate enemy combatants in close quarters. The Dragoon features two XM11 Beamblades, each sheathed at the forearm.

With its development and production taking place across various Coalition nations and colonies, several variants of the Dragoon have emerged as distinct (to varying levels) from the baseline YF-03A, such as the YF-03J Armored Survival Kit Test Type. Various rumors surround the elusive Dragoon Project, as some speculate the mobile fencer's use with special forces units in offworld operations, particularly on the planet Vasati.
