Quisquella, officially the Union of Quisquellan States, is a federal republic comprised of four island republics and a single stellar republic. Situated along the Gulf of Antillia and the Quisquellan Sea, Quisquella only shares land borders with the Southcross Confederation, through the leased port of Freeport City. The Quisquellan government regards Freeport City as an illegal foreign colony, and maintains a permanent military presence on the border. Power in Quisquella is vested in the National Revolutionary Vanguard, the successor to the Armed Forces Movement which triumphed in the Quisquellan Civil War.

Due to its strategic position, the Union of Quisquellan States is vital to Commonwealth policy in the Antillian Gulf and North Esmaria in general, boasting a noteworthy land and naval component, as well as an undersea colonization effort and amphibious mobile fencer development. It maintains close defensive ties with Ancoria and Itzmilco, acting as a strategic bulwark against the Coalition.

History

The Union of Quisquellan States owes its beginnings to the Association of Quisquellan States, a loose economic union spanning the republics of Tainoco, Puerto de Mocuiltonoani, the Tecan State and Huichichilín, primarily belonging to the Esmarian market from its 904 S.C. founding until the Twilight War. The conflict's ensuing nuclear exchange, the atomic destruction of multiple Esmarian naval bases in the country, and the collapse of the Esmarian economy were all contributing factors that left the member states of the Association in utter ruin. The beginning of the Rational Calendar changed little — Coalition aid was given in return for expanded basing rights, leading to growing discontent towards the perceived 'colony' that the Quisquellan republics had become relative to the Coalition.

Félix Castillo, an educated career military officer of the National Army of Tainoco, had been left discontent with the status quo. In 0009 R.C., he formed the clandestine Armed Forces Movement (MFA) with other military officers, both in Tainoco and in the neighboring states. A coup d'etat attempt across the AQS in 0012 would propel him into the spotlight, as the weeklong occupation of Tainoco's presidential palace allowed him to televise his demands nationwide before loyal military elements could end the standoff. The failure of the coup and his subsequent arrest would lead to nationwide protests and unrest, with many of the failed plotters going on to form rural insurgencies in Castillo's name.

His release on the eve of Tainoco's presidential elections in 0013 would see him run as an independent candidate and triumph narrowly in the the following year. At the behest of the Coalition, attempts were made to bar him from inauguration, leading to widespread revolts and an eventual direct seizure of government by the MFA on 2 January of 0015 R.C. Motivated by revolutionary fervor, cells across the AQS enacted their own coups. Castillo would go on to declare the formation of the Union of Quisquellan States on 8 November, annulling all preexisting unequal treaties between Quisquella and the Coalition. The CCN scrambled to back a counter-revolution to Castillo's cause, which came in the form of the Revolutionary Democratic Front (FRD). Weapons were funneled into Quisquella through Freeport City, quickly leading to the formation of militias, with many of the planter class fearing Castillo's espoused ideas of land reform. Elements of the military that had not aligned themselves with the MFA found themselves fearing purges, and thus sided with this burgeoning movement.

The first shots would be fired in 0016 R.C., with a failed coup attempt in Tainoco's capital of Gran Cacique quickly spiraling into the beginnings of a civil war. Widespread Coalition involvement in the conflict, most egregiously coming in the form of Operation Iron Thunder, would galvanize many other South Esmarian nations fearful of the newly-established Coalition. Widespread military support for the MFA came from nations previously at odds with one another—Itzmilco, Costa Ferrea, Ancoria and Novadieta had all found common cause in the perceived 'defense' of their sovereignty against Coalition encroachment.

From 0016 to 0024 R.C., Quisquella would suffer brutal conflict, which had all but escalated to Coalition forces directly engaging Itzmilcan, Ancorian, Costaferrean and Novadietan troops by its latter years. Ultimately, however, the MFA would prevail, crushing the FRD and driving the Coalition back into Freeport City. At threat of nuclear escalation, the MFA decided against besieging the treaty port. Consolidating power, Castillo quickly established a definitive ideology for the Union beyond vague nationalistic ideas, deriving much of his vision from the Union State's own recent formation. Reorganizing the Armed Forces Movement into the National Revolutionary Vanguard, Castillo's National-Vanguardist ideology derived many ideas from Labourism, Avantgardism and Prostasism.

Quisquella would be among the states present at the Místria Summit, participating in the founding of the Pan-Esmarian Commonwealth. After a brief period of economic reconstruction, Quisquella quickly established its position in the Commonwealth by merit of its strategic access to the Antillian Gulf, spearheading the undersea colonization endeavors. The UQS would establish a minor space presence on the back of its seafloor resource extraction efforts, establishing colonies in L5 with Itzmilcan assistance.

Presently, Quisquella boasts one of the largest militaries of the Commonwealth, despite its size and relative economic power. Its military, the National Revolutionary Armed Forces, are known to have a significant reach, leveraging merchant marine assets to fight in a multitude of overseas proxy wars across Plateia, particularly in Zanobia. Due to National-Vanguardism's appeals to racial and social liberation, they are believed to have financial connections to the radical labourist Hartke Faction, a component of the Federal Renewal superparty in the Emerald Alliance.
