Ancoria, officially the Ancorian Federation, is a federal presidential republic in South Esmaria. The largest and most populous nation on the Esmarian continent, it is bordered to the north by Novadieta and Guatitan, to the west by Chinchapacha, Yucay and Guasuguay, and to the south by Karuland and Costa Ferrea. Its capital is Itaguaçu, though the Porto Sereno-Místria megalopolis comprises the largest urban area in the country. Ancoria is one of the most multicultural and ethnically-diverse nations on Plateia, owing to its long history of immigration before and after the start of the Rational Era. Its official languages are Viratian and Goitacá, while Guasuguayan, Low Vestan, Vestan, Namean, Stepetsian, Tenzanese are recognized as minority languages; with further indigenous languages being recognized at the state level. Still, beyond federal recognition many further minority languages, such as Oscian, exist as co-official on a municipal level.

Ancoria's present 0087 Constitution centered Ancoria's governance around the Federative Pact, which defines the present 41 federative units comprising the Ancorian Federation—which are further designated into 40 states and 1 federal district. Of its 41 federative units, 9 are located offworld. Ancoria also possesses two offworld 'federal territories', which are non-autonomous and operate under direct oversight of the central government. Relics of Ancoria's prior National-Statist dictatorship manifest in the President's authority to appoint 'interventionists' to fill the role of state governors in times of emergency.

Owing to its fertile inland states and its possessions in Danavus and Sophia, Ancoria hosts a monolithic agricultural industry, responsible for a great deal of the Commonwealth's food needs. Ancoria also stands at the forefront of the Commonwealth's heavy industry and high-tech sectors, being home to Engenheiros Bélicos Panesmaria S.A., it is the beating heart of the Commonwealth's arms development.

History

Though Ancoria was uninvolved in the Twilight War, the resulting global economic downturn deeply staggered Ancoria's economy, with many global market centers in the northern hemisphere left in ruins. Political crisis followed under these economic pressures. Insurgencies in the northeast, as well as the rise of radical Labourist and Avantgardist parties, led President Valdemar Oliveira de Carvalho to assume emergency powers in 0002 R.C. amidst a climate of growing political violence. Suppression of dissident groups followed, and soon Carvalho's authoritarian regime would expand to an outright ban of political parties, enshrining the nationalistic, apolitical ideology of 'National Statism' (Nacional-Estadismo). The Presidential Regime, as this period would come to be known, would be defined by vast growth in Ancoria's industry, agriculture and infrastructure.

Under the Regime, Presidents were to be elected indirectly through an electoral college every four years. The state's official ideology was built around an 'apolitical approach to governance', described by outsiders as authoritarian to quasi-totalitarian in nature. Furthermore, it was followed by a cohesive definition of a 'Closed Country' (País Fechado) policy, which mandated a heavily restricted approach to external trade and immigration. Despite the authoritarianism evident in the Carvalho administration, token Labourist concessions vastly expanded workers' rights and uplifted millions out of poverty. A cult of personality surrounding the presidency was established, reminiscent of earlier dictatorships in Ancorian history.

Carvalho's administration would carry on until the end of his 3rd term in 0008 R.C., when he would be succeeded by his vice-president, Basílio Pereira. Though he would maintain, and in some cases even expand the policies defined by his predecessor, the first challenges to National Statism would come with the advent of the Quisquellan Civil War (0016-0024 R.C.) and the military threat of the Coalition. Fears of the military threat posed by the Coalition would challenge preexisting isolationist rhetoric, leading to detente with Ancoria's regional rivals, Itzmilco and Costa Ferrea. Consolidation of foreign interests in Quisquella would eventually see the Armed Forces Movement triumph in the conflict, a victory in Ancorian foreign interests. Subsequent growth of Pan-Esmarian ideals would lead to the Místria Summit in 0029 R.C., hosted in Ancoria. Thus, Ancoria would be among the founding member nations of the Pan-Esmarian Commonwealth.

Following the Commonwealth's founding, many autarkic and isolationist policies were immediately relaxed in favor of regional trade, free travel and tourism. Mankind's migration to space would further strain the authoritarian policies of the Ancorian state, as the politics, distance and logistics of space colonies proved a challenge to the presidency's prior ability to easily appoint state 'interveners' to gubernatorial roles. Decentralization would persist in tandem with the country's offworld expansion, which particularly focused on the Vasatian and Sophian L-points, as well as the colonization of Danus. The government's expansive powers over labor unions were used in this time to spearhead inland and offworld colonization efforts by means of work relocations.

Growing opposition movements to National Statism's authoritarian facets over the course of the 0060s and 0070s would consolidate in the form of the Movimento Pela Democracia Popular Ancoriana, or MDPA, which advocated for the abolition of the electoral college and the establishment of direct electoral processes in Ancoria. The presidency of Nísio Teixeira would be the last appointed by electoral college, as he would announce the lifting of party bans and transitional preparations for democratic elections shortly after Ancoria's victory in the 0082 Esmaria Cup.

The elections of 0086 R.C. would be the first popular election in almost a century, leading to the election of MDPA unity candidate Silviano Campos, a former union leader, running alongside centre-right conservative leader Flávio Filho. Democratic reforms followed, leading to the country's current 0087 Constitution defining its constituent federative units.

The MDPA would dissolve itself shortly thereafter, reconstituting itself into various political parties that now define the current political climate of Ancoria. The aftermath of the Colony War has left many in Ancoria's political scene wary of the threat posed by the Coalition, with a public outraged by its ongoing atrocities offworld. Despite this, Ancoria continues to define the 'pacifist bloc' of the Commonwealth, with an outstanding majority of its populace opposed to conflict with the Coalition, domestically or offworld. Due to this general aversion, policy has largely focused on defensive strategies, hosting the Niquiá subterranean command centre in the Coari Rainforest.
