The Free State of Grensland is a presidential Spacer republic located in L5, comprised of six colonies following Operation Boswilger. The backbone of the Compact, Grensland represents the primary force in the cause of Spacer independence. Prior to its secession from the Coalition in 0117 R.C., the Autonomous Republic of Grensland was among the largest centers of military development in the broader Coalition, its own special status within the Coalition a byproduct of Mitsubara megacorporate lobbying. Its government demonstrated a notable sympathy towards spatial independence initiatives, granting asylum to Chen Chengyang during the call for his arrest by Asterian officials in 0108 R.C., a series of decisions that would lead to the outbreak of the Colony War.
History
The Free State of Grensland owes its origins to the aftermath of the Twilight War, in which the Vestan government sought to relocate populations displaced by nuclear warfare to space. As the Lowlands were among the worst hit, they would serve as the demographic basis for the project. Vesta's own pre-war colony batch, now named Grensland, Vrijheid and Stellaland, would become the first choice for relocation upon their completion in 0002 R.C. While Standard Atomics would acquire VEB Westenische Weltraumwerke in 0014, they agreed to continue the maintenance of the colonies as well as complete the remaining unfinished colony of Witkaap. Over the course of the 1st century RC, these colonies would develop a unique culture distinct from their once-homes, a divergence that would be recognized with the 0089 Spacer Linguistics Conference and the official recognition of “Spacer Low Vestan” (or the Ruimters language), leading to the renaming of Vrijheid to Vryheid.
The vast industrial amenities provided by their design made Grensland and other constituent colonies very attractive to Mitsubara investment, eventually becoming a major industrial facility to the megacorporation. Years of lobbying within the Coalition Congress eventually led to the establishment of the autonomous republics of Grensland, Vryheid, Stellaland and Witkaap, separating the Grensland batch of colonies from the L5 Development Administration as distinct Coalition member-states. While this experiment in spacer sovereignty was little more than a cynical means to advance megacorporate interests in Coalition government, it would plant the seed of Spacer nationalism in the collective discourse, an underlying sympathy that would rear its head in 0108 R.C. when Chen Chengyang sought asylum in Grensland. Asterian retaliation for harboring such a revolutionary figure would ultimately lead to the Colony War, a devastating conflict between the Coalition and the Union State, as well as the ideological roots of a distinct Spacer identity.
Throughout the span of the conflict, Grensland would find itself almost entirely cut from the CCN, forcing the besieged colony to vastly expand its own colonial security forces, as well as cooperate with adjacent L5 colonies' security forces, in order to maintain parity against the Union State's fearsome bipedal fighting machines, the Bogatyr. As a result, Grensland commenced Project Vegter, an initiative to convert its existing array of construction suits into mobile fencers. Project Vegter would act as prelude to Grensland's endemic production of mobile fencers. The Colony War would build sentiment in Grensland and the adjacent colonies in L5 of a new national identity distinct from those of the Plateian nations. This would culminate in the Battle of Vryheid in RC 0111, in which Grenslander forces saved the nearby colony of Vryheid from certain capture by Asterian forces.
By the time of the war's conclusion in 0114 R.C., sentiment would begin to decisively shift towards independence, commencing with Grensland's integration of neighboring colonies Vryheid and Stellaland into the Autonomous Republic, a move unauthorized by the Coalition Congress. Frederik Andries Vlok, a Grenslander politician and independence advocate, would initially propose the ideals of 'Sterregemeenskap', or 'Stellar Community', inspired by Chen Chengyang's Five Principles of Mankind. His election in 0115 R.C. would pave the way towards this move, and the Free State of Grensland would be established the following year. Initial bids for recognition would be met by hostility from the Coalition. After a series of skirmishes in L5, the GDF conducted Operation Boswilger, seizing the surrounding space colonies of its Laplace Point. The success of this operation would prove pivotal to the independence of Grensland and the formation of the Sovereign Colonies Compact.
