The Republic of Costa Ferrea is a federal presidential republic bounding the southern cone of the Esmarian continent. At 651,946 square miles, it is fifth largest country in the Commonwealth. Operating on a federal presidential system, it is comprised of a single federal district and 20 terrestrial provinces. Beyond Plateia, it holds a multitude of possessions both in space and on Vasati, a responsibility that led the Costaferrean military to undergo exponential expansion in the latter half of the 1st century RC.

History

The beginning of the Rational Calendar was relatively favorable to Costa Ferrea, boasting the second largest economy in South Esmaria and the highest GDP per capita. Paired with its abundant natural resources, Costa Ferrea was quickly capable of mobilizing for the first colonial forays into space, competing closely with neighboring Ancoria and Karuland for a metaphorical 'place in the sun' in Mankind's future in space.

The Quisquellan Civil War (0016-0024 R.C.) was a major political opportunity for Costaferrean diplomacy, as it proved to be the galvanizing factor in establishing the Pan-Esmarian Commonwealth and achieving detente with the republic's immediate neighbors. As focus shifted to the stars above, vast Costaferrean mineral wealth proved vital to the first space colonies. The Costaferrean Resource Boom of the 0030s-0040s R.C. brought about an unprecedented period of economic prosperity, the country's international image peaking with their victories in the 0034 and 0038 Esmaria Cups. Costaferrean claims to Vasati were made in the Treaty of Las Perlas, granting them the largest planetary claim of any Commonwealth nation, which would later come to define Talía Province, named after then-madam president Talía Montemayor.

Meteoric growth would fade into stagnation by the 0060s, rapid stellar expansion and economic mismanagement leading to diminishing profits. Deindustrialization in the 0070s hit Costa Ferrea's Plateian mainland hard, mines closing en masse as offworld resource yields outcompeted their domestic counterparts. The 0074 Miners' Strike would prove a watershed moment in Costaferrean history, leading to violent suppression at the hands of the national military. Labourist insurgencies would plague the country throughout the remainder of the decade, military influence over government creeping proportionally.

The advent of the 0080s Novadietan Space Boom, and growing competition in the Plateian raw resources market from the Condean nations, would pose a major threat to Costa Ferrea's edge, leading to a massive shift in priorities favoring massive resource extraction efforts on Vasati and the asteroid belt in order to stay competitive. These efforts would persist into the 0100s R.C., backed by paramilitary and military intimidation of workers, as well as the violent suppression of multiple workers' uprisings on Vasati. The completion of the Pan-Condean Maglev on 0114 R.C. would leave Costa Ferrea solely competitive off-world.

As of the present, Costa Ferrea is in a persistent state of economic crisis, rampant inflation and a troubling amount of military influence over government. The 'Nueva Sociedad' political status quo established in 0074 R.C. has been a fair compromise between the incumbent National Liberal Party, the Conservative Party and the Labourist Workers' Confederation, but the growing power of the Costaferrean armed forces threatens to upset this balance, with the military-headed 'National Defense Junta' being viewed as the true seat of power in the country. Despite its economic woes, Costa Ferrea's military remains one of the strongest in the Commonwealth, and its defense industry serves as a major manufacturer of aircraft and missiles.

As the situation at home continues to ferment, the military sees their opportunity to consolidate power and glory: with the situation in CCN-administered Vasati worsening, conflicting Costaferrean claims in the Byron Islands (Islas Calipsas) and Rakuenjima (Islas Atalantas) may finally become something they may realistically act upon.

History - Solar War

Emerging victorious from its intervention in the Vasatian Wars, Costa Ferrea experienced a wave of nationalistic uproar affirmed by its triumph. Despite the military's victories, the record approval ratings of the Vischer administration had ensured the ascendancy of civilian administration and curbed the National Defense Junta's gradual power creep, at least for the time being. Historic rebounds in the Costaferrean market led to Vischer overseeing the passing of the Comprehensive Economic Reform, which sought to combat debt and inflation while encouraging a stabilization of military spending. This wave of positive economic trends persisted from Q4 0118 all the way to Q3 0119, only to come to a complete halt amidst uncertainties brought about by the events of Operation Boswilger.

Fearing a war in the L-points might lead to a second Colony War, the National Defense Junta was tasked with developing a comprehensive strategy with the current situation in mind. Dubbed Plan de Guerra "Verde", its drafting remained incomplete by the time the first shots were fired on Apason.

Roused to action by the foreign invasion of a Commonwealth member's territories, the Costaferrean delegation to the Unified Defense Command voted alongside Itzmilco, Karuland and Quisquella in favor of not only defensive operations, but also offensive operations against the Union State and Coalition. Now, once again, the National Defense Junta finds itself unchallenged, granted carte blanche to prosecute the war to its necessary ends. Voices that once dissented against the power and influence of the Junta over Costa Ferrea's government have either fallen silent — or been silenced.
