The Federation of Omdi is a constituent federation of the Union of Eningui. Situated upon the South Hyperian Ocean, Omdi is bordered by the Republic of Ambundia and the Federation of Kwama to its north, with the federations of Zimbahuru and Umzantshi bordering it to the south and south-east respectively. The second-largest federation within Eningui's framework, its capital and largest city is ǀAiǂoab. Its predecessor was the People's Republic of Omdi, which lasted from the defeat of minority rule in 0020 R.C. to its participation in the Conference of KwaNdwandwe in 0023 R.C.
Omdi's economy is largely oriented towards natural resources such as fishing and rare metals, as well as tourism and gambling, of which a significant sector exists in Omdi. The “Omdi Model” has become noteworthy within the Union and abroad as a model for market-oriented reforms, and the federation is looked upon as a beacon of prosperity within the framework of Isizweist thought.
History
Known during minority rule as North-West Amzance, Omdi was initially colonized by the Vestan Empire. With its collapse in the 860s S.C., the territory fell under the possession of the United Empire of the Thulean Isles. It would come under the control of Amzance following its independence from Thulean rule in 886 S.C., being of particular interest due to its vast mineral wealth, in particular its diamonds.
The Twilight War would significantly destabilize Amzance, to which the autonomous territory quickly found itself gripped by low-intensity conflict. The Omdi Liberation Organization was founded in 0001 R.C. by Samuel Kuhangua, a graduate of Coniston University. It was established as a response to the banning of the Saa-Ovondi People's Organization, which had sought greater autonomy for indigenous Omdi peoples within the broader framework of North-West Amzance's political system. Conscious of the failures of peaceful organizations like the SOPO, and the ongoing revolutionary struggle in Amzance proper, Kuhangua's movement was founded at inception with militant pretenses and aims. Many of its founding cadres, while educated, also possessed fighting experience as former trackers of the ANAF, granting them a decisive edge against Amzancian conscripts unfamiliar with Omdi's landscape.
Of preexisting revolutionary groups, the OLO quickly grew to prominence, most parallel organizations either disbanding or joining under the banner of the OLO by 0015. Known for his charismatic style of leadership, Samuel Kuhangua openly cooperated with revolutionary groups across the border. The Union State would deploy advisors to Omdi by 0016 R.C., assisting the nascent revolutionary movement against Amzancian colonial rule, waging a campaign of asymmetrical warfare against the ANAF occupiers. The ANAF would withdraw from North-West Amzance shortly after Operation Gemstone, overwhelmed by widespread internal revolt within Amzance proper. Left to fend for themselves, the defense of North-West Amzance against the OLO largely fell into the hands of the North-West Amzance Territorial Forces.
Under the favorable conditions, Kuhangua's campaign escalated to direct military confrontations which saw a number of tactical victories against NWATF garrisons. News of Amzance's collapse in 0019 would quickly pressure Governor-General Friedrich Goerz into commencing peace talks, which lasted into 0020 R.C. The Treaty of Warmsonne effectively marked the end of the Omdi Conflict, dissolving the colonial government of North-West Amzance and establishing the People's Republic of Omdi in its wake. In the wake of his victory, Samuel Kuhangua would take on the name of Andimba Kuhangua, beginning a campaign of 'authenticity' which focused on reversing Eurysian-style names and encouraging the populace to adopt more 'authentically Zanobian' names. Disillusioned by the brutality of revolutionary violence in neighboring Amzance, Samuel Kuhangua promised no harm to his defeated adversaries, instead laying down a framework for the peaceful resettlement of the settler minority to their own autonomous republic on the western coast. Dubbed ǂKhari ǃHommis (Görzland in Zanobish), it would be developed over the ensuing decades as a gradual relocation of Omdi's settler population proceeded, enforced by a series of increasingly restrictive policies that limited economic opportunities and civil rights for settler peoples outside of Görzland.
In 0023, the OLO would agree to the terms of the Conference of KwaNdwandwe, becoming a founding member of the Union of Eningui, with the OLO itself reorganized to become the Omuomdi branch of the IQembu leSizwe seNingi. Kuhangua would rule Omdi into the late 0070s, drafting an extensive will of his political vision for Omdi (and perhaps one day Eningui) for his political successors to adhere to.
The advent of the Zanobian Crash in the 0040s led to the reopening of many mines that had been abandoned over the course of the OLO's insurgency, catapulting Omdi into an economic boom that pushed it to the forefront of its sister federations. Omdi's natural wealth served as the framework to its advantage. By the 0080s, Omdi's leverage allowed for the passing of multiple market-oriented economic reforms, establishing a system analysts have dubbed 'Market Isizweism'. Restrictions on gambling and casinos were lifted, establishing casinos across a number of major cities, as well as a number of nature preserves in Omdi's hinterlands. Economic prosperity persisted into the 0090s and 0100s, introducing a system of annual cheques to Omdi's small population funded by the profits of casinos and federation-operated mines.
Today, Omdi's government can be considered to be the most 'moderate' of the Eninguian federations, benefiting significantly from outside tourism. However, some hardline Isizweists outside of Omdi disagree significantly with the federation's governance, regarding it to have fallen astray from Isizweist ideals. Outside of Eningui, however, the 'Omdi Model' is studied carefully by economists and analysts, and is regarded as being the spiritual predecessor to reformist thought in the Asterian Union State.
