Gryphon Program
The various regimens and anatomical components that have allowed for the effective “manufacture” of artificial ESPers, as per the Coalition's Gryphon Program, vary in their intensity of the modification of the subject person.
From a young age, potential candidates for the program—almost entirely from off-world orphans—underwent extreme modification procedures to prepare a psychically weak (or even 'mute') individual into a combat esper status. For one, this involved hormonal therapies and experimental neurological operations that boosted the physical aptitudes of maturing subjects to levels above that of even the most physically excellent baseline human; this not only included significant increases in muscle mass and density, height, and appropriate bone densities, but also in reaction times and general cogitation. As a means to suppress any feelings seen as “extraneous” to the nature of their future missions, subjects also receive implantation of behavior modification devices and lesions to certain regions of the brain. This combination approach allows a controllable, and ultimately permanent, tempering of the brain from emotions such as rage.
These physiological upgrades, however, necessitated an uplift of other bodily systems to keep up with such increased oxygen and energy demands, both to the brain and musculoskeletal system. All subjects' hearts are implanted with ventricular assist devices to maintain appropriate cardiac output without sustained degradation to heart tissue. Synthetic bloodpacks are also implanted near to the heart to aid in the perfusion of a more metabolically efficient blood substitute.
For the psychic manifestation process itself, subjects receive psychic amplifier implants at various focal points of psychic energy; these points chiefly lie along the central meridian of the body, stretching from the lower torso to the head.
As an adult, subjects receive total eye replacement surgery and significant communication augmentations on their ears to make use of optical and auditory sensors with heightened fidelity or filtration of excess noise. Respirators and voice modulators are also implanted to aid in oxygenation and identity obfuscation for certain military operations. In addition, their skin is also grafted with permanent helmet connection ports for better connection between the head and combat helmets; such articles of clothing mount multi-optics systems for various wavelength visions. All subjects are surgically sterilized to further reinforce control over their persons and limit any residual emotional reactions from sexual urges, in addition to preventing psychic abnormalities manifesting in any progeny that would otherwise occur.
