Vesta, officially the Federal State of Vesta, is a federal republic located in northern Eurysia. The second-most populous country in Eurysia after Volscia, Vesta is one of the largest economies in the Coalition, with one of the highest GDP per capita indices. It is bordered by Guibardy to the west, Elvice and Volscia to the south, and Bairgland and Lebusia to the east. It shares a maritime border with the United Federation, with the Thulean Isles Tunnel Network connecting the Eurysian mainland with the Isles, and playing a significant role in trade.
A founding member of the Coalition, Vesta is regarded as a great power, with its industrial and technological sectors renowned for standard-setting quality. Its primary defense contractors, VEB Hessler & Foch and VEB Strauß, play a major role in the CFA's arms industry. Its economy sustains a robust social welfare system, as well as universal healthcare and tuition-free public education.
History
The defeat of the Vestan Empire in the Great Eurysian War (857-862 S.C.) precipitated the dissolution of the Continental Union, its personal dynastic union under the Hohenburg dynasty with the Zalesian Empire, as well as the outbreak of Labourist-led revolution in both nations. The Vestan Revolution (863-864 S.C.) saw the triumph of Labourist Eunists against monarchists and reactionaries, leading to the establishment of the Vestan Solidarity Republic led by the National Labourist Party. The triumph of similar revolutions in Guibardy, Lebusia and Bairgland led to the founding of the Council of Labourist Nations, an international alliance centered around military, economic, and political cooperation, as well as mutual aid. Armed opposition would persist into the 870s, primarily from conservative-aligned Freikorps, while others sympathetic to the old regime fled overseas, in particular Karuland and Novadieta.
This emergence of Labourist ideology on the continent led to a wave of concern among the Eurysian monarchies, leading to the Continental Blockade—a United Empire-led policy of political and economic containment of the CLN. This policy would persist until the Elvetian War (888-893 S.C.), in which the CLN sided with local Labourist revolutionaries. The ensuing war involved the Thulean, Chrysonean and Volscian monarchies, and led to an inconclusive stalemate. The tribulations of this conflict played a pivotal role in the emergence of Avantgardist ideology. Beginning in Volscia and spreading to encompass the southern belt of Eurysia, the emergence of the International Avant-Garde proved a threat to both the traditional order and the Labourist bloc. The ensuing paradigm shift saw tentative cooperation between the CLN and the United Empire.
The 900s S.C. would be marked by a number of proxy conflicts across the globe, as well as the beginnings of the Space Race, which saw Vesta among the nations foremost in scientific innovation. The establishment of VEB Westenische Weltraumwerke would serve as the primary vehicle for Vestan space advancement, the state-operated corporation eventually tasked with the construction of the first space colonies.
The International Avant-Garde's invasion of Elvice in 964 S.C. would mark the beginning of the Twilight War, which would escalate to a full nuclear exchange—dubbed the Great Exchange—in 968 S.C. The CLN's total defeat in the conflict saw its occupation by the International Avant-Garde, instating collaborator regimes in the former CLN nations. Vesta would be governed by the Visionaries, an Avantgardist element comprised of sympathetic students, philosophers and ideologues. This period of occupation, and the ensuing wave of brutal repression by the new regime, forced the Labourists to cooperate with moderate and conservative resistance elements against the occupation, establishing the United Front in 966 S.C.
Esmarian intervention would prove crucial in the final triumph against the Avantgardists, leading to the liberation of much of northern Eurysia from the Avantgardist yoke by 970 S.C. Negotiations in the aftermath of the conflict proved crucial in the post-war compromise that would be Vesta's new government. The Blesen Agreement would see the National Labourist Party collaborate with liberal, conservative and monarchist elements in a power-sharing agreement that led to the founding of the Federal State of Vesta. As part of the agreement, House Hohenburg finally relinquished its claim to the Vestan throne, coming to accept republican governance. Dissident members of the National Labourist Party, as well as former members of the Visionaries, would flee overseas to Zalesia, playing a role in the ensuing founding of the Prostasist ideology. In the aftermath of the Blesen Agreement, the National Labourist Party would be reorganized into the Solidarity Party, integrating and rehabilitating many former dissidents and abandoning an exclusively Labourist stance.
Vesta would partake in the subsequent Tamlin Round Table Agreement in 974 S.C., agreeing to disband its fledgling armed forces and fold them into the nascent Coalition Forces Authority, becoming one of the first nations after Glendresia to do so. The commencement of the Rational Calendar in 979 S.C. (0001 R.C.) marked the beginning of a lengthy reconstruction process for the Bundesstaat. Large swathes of the country required radiation cleanup, and displaced peoples from the Vestan lowlands were among the first choices for offworld relocation to the first space colonies, including Grensland, Vrijheid and Stellaland.
Despite these adversities, however, Vesta experienced a post-war economic miracle in the early 0010s R.C., seeing a significant expansion of its consumer goods economy that allowed it to quickly grow into the largest economy on the continent. VEB Westenische Weltraumwerke would be absorbed into the Esmarian Standard Atomics in 0014 R.C. In exchange, the Vestan government was afforded a significant stake in the multinational, which it wielded in order to play a pivotal role in the Coalition's expansion to the stars.
Post-war Vesta has maintained a fairly stable political status quo, with the Solidarity Party maintaining an effective hold on power for much of the 1st century R.C. However, Coalition disillusionment in the aftermath of the Colony War has led to the consolidation of a number of minor populist opposition parties into the Party for National Reform, which follows a Vestan interpretation of LeBlancist political thought and advocates a Coalition-skeptical platform.
