Space disciplinarianism
Space disciplinarianism is a unique type of custom that arose in the insular cultures of most space colonies—either on purpose, or simply by the product of their environment. This concept is a general term that is used to refer to a series of collectivist ideals that seek to protect the welfare of space colonies as a whole, versus more individualist mindsets seen on proper worlds such as Plateia or Vasati. The most common ideal within space disciplinarianism is that of infrastructure conservation, where all colonists are mandated to report damages to colonial infrastructures; as even minor mistakes can lead to major crises. As such, spacers have built a sense of collective social responsibility that those “on the ground” simply do not express to the same degree. An evolved form of this ideal is the tenet of preventative culture. The risks of inhabiting space infrastructures means that spacers invest heavily in preventative measures, both corporeal objects and incorporeal concepts such as rigorous training, drilling, and societal norms of vigilance; this can even extend into the sociopolitical sphere, where ideological uniformity is favored to prevent unrest that would led to station destabilization and potential crisis.
From these ideals of space disciplinarianism, the acts of onboard socialization and education—bolstered by local laws that enforce such behaviors—leads to populations with higher social cohesion and collective attitudes than their planetborne kin, thanks to the stakes involved.
