The Kingdom of Mestraim is a unitary theocratic monarchy located in the northeastern corner of the Zanobian continent. The capital and largest city of the kingdom is Castrome. The kingdom is governed through a combination of royal power resting in the hands of the Eli dynasty, a Privy Council composed of the King's Tristatae and the Archipater of Soterople, and the legislative process of a Senate. It is divided into 51 nomes.
History The Kingdom of Mestraim, long reigned over by the authoritarian House of Eli, prospered as the hegemon of the North Zanobian Union - a personal collection of realms in personal union, as well as the dominating influence upon Novia to the south, ruled by a cadet branch of the Eli dynasty. As the oilfields to the west of North Zanobia dried alongside Mestraim's waning power, however, the monarchy was dealt a crushing blow when the Union was dissolved by the Masician Revolution, which swept through all of its territories west of Mestraim.
A perception that the Revolution posed a direct threat towards the Mestraic monarchy subsequently caused Castrome to deploy its military to “reestablish order” in the west, in what would become known as the North Zanobian War (0056-0064 R.C.). An unmoving frontline scarred by the use of chemical, biological and tactical nuclear weapons dominated the bulk of the conflict, culminating in a final push by the Royal Mestraic Armed Forces in Operation Atooui-99 to “obliterate the rebel forces.” While making more impressive gains, Mestraim was ultimately forced to retreat upon direct and strong Union State intervention through the Nine Day War (1 Aug-10 Aug 0064 R.C.), losing Ni-Venipi island in the process. The Ceasefire at Ni-Gol (11 Sept 0064 R.C.) restored prewar boundaries and formally dissolved the North Zanobian Union, while guaranteeing the sovereignty of the Mestraic Kingdom and security of the fledgling Masician People's Federation. With no proviso to governmental recognition, however, Mestraim continued to maintain the kingdoms that formerly made up Masician territories to be their legitimate governments.
The costly attempt to reimplement the North Zanobian Union, despite being presented to the population as a successful defense of Mestraim, ultimately plunged the Kingdom into a crisis. With their primary source of petroleum lost, what profits that could have made way into royal coffers disappeared. In its wake, Mestraim was forced to switch focus to Novia in the south, being its most traditional sphere of influence, as well as cooperation with the Kingdom of Amurack to the west. Meanwhile, at home, consequential to postwar policies aimed at “stamping out possible chaos induced through extremism,” the Kingdom also saw its long-present problems with authoritarianism and inequality further exacerbated.
