The Eastern Seaboard Confederation is a loose confederation of 13 states bounding the northern shore of the Gulf of Antillia. The most populous member of the Emerald Alliance, the ESC serves as a cultural and political cornerstone of the entire alliance, being an epicenter of its economy, culture and politics. By GDP within the Emerald Alliance, it is rivaled only by the likes of Florisando.
Multiple key air, naval and spaceports are located within its borders proving crucial to civilian and military transit on- and offworld. Its naval facilities of Southport Bounds and South Dalton Naval Yard are a vital component to the Coalition's maritime presence in the Hyperian Ocean. It is also heavily urbanized, with nearly the entire populace of the Confederation living in a contiguous urban region running from Trident City to Polyhymn.
The states comprising the Eastern Seaboard Confederation coincide with the first Thulean colonies in the New World. The Confederation was established in 973 S.C. following the signing of the Atlante Pact, a show of dissent by liberal and libertarian governors that had dissented against the Federal Reconstruction Commission's vast overreaches and violations of civil liberties in the waning months of the Esmarian Insurgency. The nascent ESC's defiance of the federal government would be mirrored elsewhere, eventually culminating in the Sovereign States Accord that would jointly oppose Esmaria's federal government in the Federal Crisis.
Following the SSA's triumph, the ESC would play a pivotal role in Esmaria's reorganization into the Emerald Alliance.
History
Nuclear strikes had peppered Esmaria's Eastern Seaboard during the Great Exchange, with food riots, rampant crime and massive displacements of refugees in the attacks' wake. Still, the Twilight War dragged on, and the troops sent back to the eastern seaboard to quell dissent and restore order proved insufficient in the face of such dire odds. With President Warner's assassination, the reins of government became increasingly subjected to the nebulous whims of the Federal Reconstruction Commission, a deep state of military, corporate and intelligence interests primarily concerned in restoring order in an atomically-scarred Esmaria. These attempts to restore order came with restrictions of civil liberties, and extrajudicial power given to the Federal Army.
A number of controversial abuses of power against civilian protestors and student dissidents would particularly aggravate public sentiment. Inspired by the nonviolent defiance displayed during the Criscian Spring, many would take to the streets in the ensuing Rush of Sovereignties, which eventually culminated in a number of governors openly defying the federal government. Together, they would sign the Atlante Pact on April 2, 973 S.C., founding the Confederated States of the Eastern Seaboard. The nascent CSES would go on to play a founding role in the Sovereign States Accord, initiating the Federal Crisis.
With the capitulation of Esmaria's federal government and its reorganization into the Emerald Alliance, the CSES would formalize itself into a much more permanent political structure, the Eastern Seaboard Confederation.
