Republic of Criscia
The Republic of Criscia is a unitary presidential constitutional republic located in the Azulic Northwest. Bordered to the east by the Robertan Confederation and the Republic of Tsaatl'átgi, while sharing a maritime border with the State of Tenzan, it is the westernmost republic of the Emerald Federation. It is comprised of 28 districts, which are subordinate to its central capital district in Teiry.
Its economy is primarily focused on resource extraction, with major, untapped oil and natural gas reserves the foremost among them. Criscia is of key strategic interest to the Coalition, in particular its military, and thus the country hosts a number of Coalition and CorpSec military facilities.
Owing to its history, Criscia is a trilingual country, with Asconian, Tenzanese and Knikit recognized as national languages.
History
While largely spared the worst of the Twilight War, Criscia would nevertheless find itself isolated in the midst of the ensuing Esmarian Insurgency (971-973 S.C.) on account of its remote geographic position, as well as restrictions imposed on internal travel over the course of martial law. The Admiralty Coup, taking place on June 8, 972 S.C., would bring the state under the full control of the Federal Navy, becoming a key staging ground for withdrawing Esmarian troops freshly returning from Azulic theatres, as they awaited redeployment on the home-front.
Overreaches in this period would quickly wear thin public support for this administration, however, leading to the Criscian Spring. Spurred on by the violent suppression of civilian dissent, mass protests and riots from February 28 to March 20 of 973 S.C., paired with heavy pressure from Tenzan's government, would ultimately lead to the reinstating of civilian governance in Criscia. While neutral during the course of the Federal Crisis, Criscia's government would join the other members of the Sovereign States Accord in founding the Emerald Alliance.
A number of former Federal Armed Forces elements chose to remain in Criscia, forming the backbone of its provisional military alongside its state National Guard. With the founding of the Coalition, this military would be integrated into the Coalition Forces thereafter. Assets deemed adequate for internal security would either be transferred over to the National Guard or Criscia's Department of Public Security, the latter serving a law enforcement capacity within the country. Many former Federal Army facilities that had survived the Twilight War would be transferred over to the nascent Coalition Forces or decommissioned, leaving a number of inactive sites scattered across the Criscian wilds.
As of the present, Criscia enjoys an ample amount of investment from the broader Coalition on account of its strategic importance. Owing to its highly insular political environment, many outsiders regard the Republic of Criscia's politics to be under the influence of a cabal of corporate interests, with a number of environmentalist and indigenous rights organizations opposing continued expansion of mining operations and military facilities in the republic.
