Theophanism is an offshoot of early Soterianity, founded by Theophilus of Nausthathmus. Although it shares many features with Soterianity, it is largely agreed to be a separate religion and not a sect of Soterianity. Theophanists believe in a dichotomy between a material, evil world created by the Great Serpent and his subordinate Archons, and a immaterial, pure realm inhabited by God. In the material world, immortal souls are imprisoned and tempted by the Great Serpent, but through salvation can escape from the material world and become one with God. As an extension of their belief in the inherently evil nature of the material world, Theophanists reject external authority to the best of their ability, and have historically preferred to govern themselves when possible - as they do in the “Monastic Republic” of Polyphemus. Pacifism and abhorrence of all violence are also key values of Theophanism.
