The Most Serene Republic of Joannina is a theodemocratic presidential federal republic situated along the North Esmarian sea. It shares a land border with Cossatia to its north, as well as possessing maritime borders with Telfair to its east, White Shoal to its south, Marion to its west, with Cossatia and Scorchstone to its north. Joannina is divided into a Federal District and four dioceses, which are further divided into parishes.
Joannina is known for its distinct culture relative to its neighbors, with three-fourths of its population being Jehannines, adherents to the revelations and teachings of Jeanne of Guinogue. One of the largest economies of the Emerald Alliance situated along the Esmarian Sea, its coastal cities are major ports of trade within the Alliance's internal economy. Joannina is situated along the I-68 interstate, which runs from Jetée Pèlerine to Nouveau-Lioncourt, before pathing northward into neighboring Cossatia.
History
The Twilight War and the subsequent erosion of central authority amidst the Federal Crisis led to the Church of the New Revelation's reassertion of its historical power over Joannina, assuming control of state government and legislature overnight in a bloodless self-coup by governor George Arnauld. The parallel institutions of the Church had ultimately proven a benefit for the Most Serene Republic, as it did not experience the same waves of paramilitary violence and bureaucratic chaos left in the Twilight War's wake. With the end of the Federal Crisis, the republic entered the reconstituted Emerald Alliance as a significant regional power in its own right, its cities spared the worst of the nuclear exchange's tribulations. The various institutions of the Church would prove to be the framework by which intra-alliance aid would be distributed to neighboring republics.
Today, Joannina is one of the most prosperous economies in the Esmarian Sea, rivaling the power of neighboring Telfair and White Shoal despite its comparatively smaller population. It has one of the most robust welfare systems in the Emerald Alliance, managed both by its 'secular' government institutions and the Jehannine church.
