Located along the [[North Hyperian Ocean|North Hyperian]] coast of Eurysia, Volscia is comprised of nine civil Dioceses, two of which are located in northern [[Zanobia]]. It is bordered to the north by [[Guibardy]] and [[Vesta]], to the east by [[Elvice]] and [[Chrysony]], and to the south by [[Masicia]]. With a population of over 143 million, it is the most populous Eurysian member-state of the [[Coalition of Congressional Nations|Coalition]], and the fourth most populous member-state of the Coalition as a whole. Its capital and largest city is [[Iria]], the traditional seat of power of the historical [[Volscan Republic]], the [[Volscan Empire]], the [[Kingdom of Volscia]], and the [[Avantgardism|Avantgardist]]-controlled [[Volscian Empire]]. Regarded as a great power among the Coalition states, Volscia is wields noteworthy economic and political influence, as well as a priceless connection to Eurysian arts, culture, fashion and heritage. History The losses sustained by the [[Kingdom of Volscia]] in the [[Elvetian War]] (888-893 S.C.) fighting both the [[Labourism|Labourist]] revolutionaries in Elvice, as well as their [[Council of Labourist Nations|CLN]] backers, brought the country to its limits. With an inconclusive stalemate ending hostilities, many remained discontent with the outcome of the conflict. Novel ideological and philosophical innovations emerged in the aftermath of the conflict, spearheaded by [[Amadeo Marco Fusaro]]. With an anthropocentric manifesto glorifying the ideals of art, war, industry and technological innovation, the emergent [[Tritestist Movement]] challenged the established order of Volscia's traditional political system with a futurist, avant-garde ideology that defied both the currents of tradition and progress alike. Formed from a motley crew of artists, philosophers, students and war veterans, the Avantgardist ideology gained an immediate and widespread appeal to the disaffected in the aftermath of the conflict. Paired with Labourist agitation that culminated in a failed uprising in [[Vezzanzo]] in 895 S.C., Fusaro was quick to present himself as a viable alternative to Labourism and red terror. Motivated by fears of a Labourist-driven civil war, he led the [[Race to Iria]] in the following year, in which members of the PNT marched on the capital. King [[Alphonse III]], unwilling to exacerbate bloodshed, refused to declare a state of siege—effectively allowing for a Avantgardist takeover of government. While initially willing to placate the Avantgardists, rifts between the monarchy and the new eccentric leadership of the country quickly formed. Following the assassination of numerous high-level conservative political figures in 899 S.C., King Alphonse III fled the country—effectively leaving the throne vacant and leading the Tritestists to abolish the monarchy and declare the Volscian Empire in its place, with Fusaro as its [[Comandante]]. Beyond Volscia, the new ideology had taken hold in neighboring Chrysony, where King [[Alexios VI]] had been sidelined by a similar political movement, reduced to a powerless constitutional monarch. The Kingdom of Chrysony and the Volscian Empire would found the [[International Avant-Garde]] in 900 S.C., pushing for a 'Steadfast Charge into the New Millennium', driven by artistic, industrial and scientific progress. At odds with the CLN and the [[United Empire]], the Volscian Empire would see itself involved in a number of proxy conflicts, as well as an overarching [[Space Race]] aiming to bring Mankind to the stars. Volscia would follow the [[Esmaria|Esmarian]] moon landing of 918 S.C. with one of its own, two years later. [[Riccardo Finizio]] would theorize one of the earliest concepts for a space colony, the [[Finizio Sphere]]. Still, despite the veneer of perpetual progress, many opposed the Tritestists, even as they were sidelined and banned from the legal political process entirely. International Avant-Garde attempts to assert full control over Elvice would be the catalyst for the ensuing [[Twilight War]] (964-971 S.C.). While initially vastly successful against the Council of Labourist Nations, leading to a full IAG occupation of the Eurysian continent, Thulean and Esmarian intervention in the conflict would mark the beginning of the end for the Volscian Empire. Comandante [[Benedetto Lupo]], perceiving he had been left without recourse, authorized strategic-scale nuclear attacks in 968 S.C., marking the beginning of the [[Great Exchange]]. The Allied retaliation left much of the continent devastated, with broken-backed conventional warfare persisting in the aftermath. The liberation of northern Eurysia in 970 S.C., paired with the invasion of [[Viratia]] and [[Esperia]] in January of 971 S.C., culminated in the [[April Uprising]], spearheaded by military officials, Labourists and other dissidents. Confronted by his imminent overthrow, Lupo committed suicide along with a significant number of the Tritestist Party's upper cadres. A new [[National Salvation Government]] declared itself in Iria, formalizing its surrender to the Allies. Remaining fronts swiftly collapsed as the Volscian Empire fragmented into post-nuclear infighting. Warlord conflict would last well into December, only halting through the military assistance of the Allied Powers. Still, the conflict had left Thule and Esmaria thoroughly overextended, and thus a lenient peace was imposed on Volscia, formally banning the Tritestist Party and any openly Avantgardist successor entity. The Volscian Empire would formally disband itself thereafter, establishing the Volscian Republic in its wake—chosen over a restoration of the monarchy through referendum. Concerned by the [[Osocentrism|Oscocentric]] nature of its predecessor, the ancient language of Volscan was instead chosen as the binding element of the multilingual federation. Volscia's new government would participate in the [[Tamlin Round Table Agreement]] of 974 S.C., becoming a founding member of the Coalition of Congressional Nations. Despite significant devastation sustained in the conflict, reconstruction was swift, stimulated by bulk amounts of aid from other Coalition nations, in particular [[Tenzan]]. Coalition military presence remained necessary in the initial years following the war, as a number of Avantgardist insurgencies refused to recognize the new Volscian government. Radiation cleanup proved majorly successful, with a post-war economic miracle in a similar vein to Vesta's taking place in the first decade of the [[Rational Calendar]]. Projects throughout the 0010s and 0020s sought not only to rebuild the damages brought on by the war, but also restore great monuments harkening to a common Volscic identity. The restoration of the ancient [[Great Amphitheatre]], which was partially damaged in the Twilight War, would be achieved through extensive procurement of historical and architectural records, in particular from Chrysony and [[Mestraim]]. Iria's reconstruction was declared complete in 0029 R.C., which was followed by a renaissance of renewed interest in ancient Volscan culture, leading to a number of neo-classical architectural works. Today, Volscia is the cultural heart of Eurysia, host to priceless millennia worth of arts, heritage, and culture. Even with Avantgardism far behind them, Iria's trends often stand as the vanguard of the broader Coalition's, dictating everything from film to high fashion. A tentative rehabilitation of many figures associated with Tritestism persists, with the works of many poets, artists and philosophers deemed culturally significant enough to overshadow their otherwise problematic associations with the former regime. Still, not all is well in Volscia. The [[Colony War]]'s aftermath has led to a paranoid uptick in populist sentiment against the rise of Spacer nationalism, with the [[Volscian National Movement]] (MNV) appealing to many fears regarding Spacer independence and what it might pose to the economies of the [[Plateia|Plateian]] nations. Regarded by some as a loose successor to the Tritestist Party, the Volscian National Movement has managed to skirt the ban on Avantgardist parties through loopholes and careful wording. Managing to steadily build a presence in the [[Senatus|Senate]], the MNV has made cooperation with them necessary for the incumbent [[Soterian Democrats]] to maintain their hold on power, with growth remaining steady even after a split in the party over the MNV's pro-Coalition stance. This populist wave of discontentment with the postwar status quo has been met by an increase in paramilitary violence from both ends of the political spectrum.
