Civilian and military transport ships primarily prioritize efficiency and cost-effectiveness in their propulsion systems. Torchships, utilizing fusion-based propulsion, offer both high thrust and specific impulse, allowing these large craft both the speed and time necessary to accelerate to operationally sufficient velocities. However, the complexity of these propulsion systems versus that of NTRs necessitates their careful usage, especially in theaters of high logistical strain. Thus, while warships are outfitted with simpler NTR systems, torch drives are installed onto logistically important vessels such as military carriers for both space and terrestrial operations, in addition to civilian craft that haul large quantities of resources.

To combat higher gees on torchships, the crew that man such craft undergo more developed physical conditioning regimens and g-force simulations. While ergonomic seating is usually employed, the most powerful of torchships feature acceleration-gel immersion restraints for their crews, allowing higher distribution of force and mitigation of accelerative injury. Torchships, which are structurally reinforced for these travels, also apply gradual acceleration profiles and trajectory optimizations to their flight patterns, avoiding sudden changes in velocity to reduce g-force injury.
