Although it shares many features with Soterianity, it is largely agreed to be a separate religion and not a sect of Soterianity. Theophanists believe in a dichotomy between a material, evil world created by the [[Great Serpent]] and his subordinate [[Archons]], and a immaterial, pure realm inhabited by God. In the material world, immortal souls are imprisoned and tempted by the Great Serpent, but through salvation can escape from the material world and become one with God.
